From Emily Chambers, 2021 Race Director

Each year as the leaves begin to fall and the temperature begins to cool, we turn our attention to our annual Moore than a Race.  For the past 11 years, runners of all ages have come to our Sodus headquarters in mid-October to support our 5K race.  The race raises funds for Reliant’s Donald K. Rhine scholarship program, and also honors the memory of Richard K. “Dick” Moore, a past chairman of Reliant Credit Union’s board of directors.

Dick Moore was an avid runner; he had a spirit of dedication, commitment and integrity; and he never lost sight of the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”  A life-long resident of Sodus, Mr. Moore spent 28 years working in the Sodus Central School District, first teaching math to 7th-12th grade students, and eventually serving as the district’s Business Administrator.  Mr. Moore was involved in the very early days of our credit union, and in 1985, he was elected to the board of directors.  He served as board chairman from 1986 until his passing in 2009.

“The credit union was looking for a way to honor Dick’s memory.  Creating a race to benefit our scholarship program just made sense with Dick’s devotion to running and his advocacy for education,” recalls Pamela Heald, Reliant’s President & CEO.  “One of my favorite traditions is seeing one of Dick’s family members or a family friend carrying his well-used running shoes throughout the race.”

Moore than a Race reflects the credit union’s “people helping people” philosophy, from the many volunteers and sponsors who come together to make the race possible, to the race proceeds helping more students receive scholarship funds.  Reliant’s scholarship is awarded to students who exemplify the “people helping people” philosophy—and since the race’s inception, the credit union has been able to award over $110,000 to deserving students!

The 5K takes participants on a scenic route in Sodus, NY, in the heart of apple country.  Runners and walkers are welcome to participate, and the race committee is always looking for volunteers!
